You know we stan for our squad at Beautique and naturally, we only have the best of the best on our team. Karla Cruz is one of Vancouver’s best-kept secrets when it comes to makeup artists and we are so blessed to call her one of our own. If you’ve had the pleasure of receiving a service from her (she not only does makeup but also Tooth Bling application) you know what we mean.
Karla’s creativity and constant ability to push boundaries never cease to amaze us, of course, so we had to let the world know a few juicy deets about this talented girl boss.
Read up on Karla Cruz below and be sure to book her for your next special occasion here.
Q: Who are you and what do you do? A: I’m Karla Cruz and I’m a professional makeup artist.
Q: How long have you been in the industry? A: I received my Professional Makeup Artist diploma from Cinema Makeup School in 2013 but have been doing makeup on myself and friends.
Q: How would you describe your personal style? A: I can really be 0 to 100. Most days I opt for minimal eye makeup but I still do a full foundation/contour/brow routine. Having eyelash extensions can shave so much time off your makeup routine so it’s something I’ve really embraced lately.
Q: What are some of your essential products in your kit? A: I absolutely swear by Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. They can be used as lipstick, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush. They’re just so versatile and come in so many colours.
Q: What is your go-to, can’t live without beauty service? A: Lipstick is always necessary to complete a full look. It can make all the different from taking your makeup from fresh and fun to dark and dramatic. A good brow shape-up can also do so much to lift the eyes and change the shape of the face. Natalie at JKB does such a great job.
Q: Who is your celebrity makeup inspiration? A: I’ve been obsessed with Kali Uchis and Kehlani lately. They both have such unique looks and aren’t afraid to experiment with their makeup.
Q: What is the coolest project you’ve had the opportunity to work on? A: I recently did makeup with Tatiana for the El Kartel 15 year anniversary runway show and it was so much fun. I had the opportunity to play and experiment with bright colours and shapes and it was so fun to see it all come to life with wardrobe.
Q: What are some of your predicted beauty trends for 2019? A: Death of the Insta-brow. I feel like more and more people are appreciating a more natural and softly filled in brow. It can be much more flattering and easy to do.
Q: What advice would you give to young artists just starting out? A: Find your own style and practice as much as possible. Don’t ever do looks based on what you think people will like. The key in this industry is to find and maintain individuality.
